How it works

How HelpSignal works

HelpSignal shows the latest provider-reported status for local urgent resources: shelter, food, transportation, showers, warming centers, and more. No account required.
What a listing shows you
LimitedUpdated today

Three steps

Search, check the latest information, and decide what to do next.

  1. 1

    Search

Tap a category like shelter, food, a shower, or a bus pass. No login, and no contact details needed to search.

  2. 2

    Check the status

A participating provider’s listing shows its latest reported status, update time, and public note. Other listings show details HelpSignal checked from public sources, without a provider status. A provider status more than 24 hours old becomes “Not Updated Today.”

  3. 3

    Act with confidence

Call, open the provider website, or open the full listing for hours, intake instructions, eligibility, and documents required before you travel.

What the labels mean

A listing answers two separate questions: how much is available today, and what someone has to do to get in. A third, small set of labels is HelpSignal’s own note about how recent the information is. They are the same labels everywhere on HelpSignal.

Capacity: chosen by the provider

A provider picks one of these four each time they update. It is the latest provider-reported status, not a guarantee.

Available
The provider reports the resource can be accessed under its normal rules.
Limited
Some capacity remains, but it may run out. Check the public note for details.
Full
Capacity is gone for now. The note may say when to check back.
Closed Today
Not operating today, regardless of capacity.

Access requirements: saved on the listing

These describe how to get in. They are saved separately from capacity, so a listing can be Available and Call First at the same time, and they do not change with the daily status.

Call First
Phone the provider before coming in.
Appointment Required
Access requires a scheduled appointment.
Referral Required
Access requires a referral from another agency.
ID Required
Bring identification. When the provider says ID is not needed, the listing shows “No ID Required” instead.
Walk-in
You can arrive without an appointment.

Other status types

Some services share a different kind of status, such as whether applications are open. Each one always shows its type next to its value. These are examples, not real listings.

  • ApplicationsPausedExample

This program is not currently accepting applications.

    Possible values: Open, Paused, Closed

  • FundingLimitedExample

Some funding remains, but availability may be limited.

    Possible values: Available, Limited, Exhausted

  • InventoryLowExample

    Supplies are currently limited.

    Possible values: Available, Low, Out

  • AppointmentsWaitlistExample

New appointments are currently being placed on a waitlist.

Possible values: Available, Waitlist, None Available

Set by HelpSignal

Providers never choose these. HelpSignal shows them when there is no recent provider update to rely on.

Not Updated Today
Set automatically when the provider’s last update is more than 24 hours old. The listing may still be accurate, so call first if you can.
Unknown
No provider-reported status is on file. Call before you go.

What HelpSignal does not do

  • HelpSignal does not replace HMIS, coordinated entry, provider intake, case management, or emergency services. It complements existing systems by adding a public-facing status layer for local urgent resources.
  • It does not collect client records. You can browse without an account or contact details. Optional feedback, community updates, and availability alerts store only the contact information you choose to share.
  • It is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Status can change after an update. Call the provider before traveling when possible.
